Luke Haste
Luke Haste had spent two decades in luxury yacht and commercial shipbuilding and was professionally settled. Birdon wasn’t on his radar until he heard about the chance to apply his expertise to a significant, complex vessel project and to build a new capability from scratch.
What caught his attention wasn’t the size of the company; it was the sheer scale of the ambition matched with the need for immediate, hands-on contribution. He saw an opportunity to bring twenty years of specialised experience to a focused team obsessed with one pragmatic goal: being really good at what they do. The exciting combination of a difficult challenge and the feeling of shaping something new is what got him in the door, and the genuine team relationships are what have kept him here.
At Birdon, a career path is measured by the scope of your influence and the trust you are given to solve global problems. Luke’s journey is a clear example of this trajectory. His deep experience in shipbuilding was the essential know-how needed to establish and grow Birdon’s new ship design capability in Australia. That contribution quickly led to high-impact work: Luke provided the initial conceptual design and stylistic look for a major defence vessel, a concept that was later selected by a major international client, the US Marine Corps, and is now in production. That confirmed that a single person’s contribution could directly shape a multi-year global program.
Now, as Engineering Design Manager, his focus has shifted from initial concept to practical leadership. His time is spent solving daily problems for his design team, developing efficient workflows, and mentoring staff, ensuring they can consistently deliver world-class solutions for clients like and the Australian Defence Force and the US Coast Guard.
This hands-on, problem-solving approach is what “Making it happen the Birdon way” is all about. For Luke, that mantra is simple and pragmatic: “It’s about being proactive, backing your team, and finding a path forward, even when things get tricky. It means not waiting around for the perfect conditions, but working with what we have, staying flexible, and getting the job done.”
This process is driven by the Family Culture: a shared belief built on mutual Trust, where specialised knowledge is respected, voices are heard, and the focus is always on the solution. When talented individuals from different backgrounds bring their strengths together, they can deliver on the most complex projects.

The thing I’m proudest of is building the team I get to work with every day. They’re incredibly talented people, and I feel lucky that they saw the potential here and chose to come on the journey with us. That’s the real Birdon story.
